Introducing XRY 10.9: OCR, filter for RAM extractions, iOS 17.4.1 support, and more

We are excited to announce that the new version of XRY is out.

Mobile data extraction and decoding just got a major boost with the arrival of XRY 10.9 from MSAB. If you’re in the business of recovering digital evidence, this latest release is packed with features and enhancements that are set to make your job easier.

These are just some of the ways in which XRY 10.9 will give you an edge in your investigations:

  • You’ll be able to run OCR on your extractions;
  • Now it’s easier to find out from what devices you can extract RAM;
  • Need iOS 17.4.1 support? We’ve got you covered.

There is a lot more good news in this release.

Let’s dive in.

What’s new in XRY?

Ability to run Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in XRY

When dealing with digital evidence, you’ll often come across scanned documents or images with text. It could be a screenshot of an email containing a location or name of interest. Or perhaps a picture of different types of text, such as phone numbers, passwords, contacts or meetings notes.

Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology enables you to extract this text, which can contain valuable information related to a case. Once text is extracted from images or scanned documents, it becomes searchable in XAMN. You can find keywords, names, locations, or any other relevant information pertaining to your investigation much more efficiently.

And you can do it all with XRY 10.9.

New filter for RAM extractions

MSAB has set a new standard in mobile forensics with its exclusive ability to perform RAM dumps, an unparalleled feature in the industry.

The extraction of RAM in digital forensics is very significant as it can reveal historic and live data including passwords, Wi-Fi connections, and messages, all visible in plain text. This was once considered nearly impossible in mobile forensics. Not anymore. Not with XRY.

Knowing from what devices you can extract RAM is vital. So, we’ve added a new filter in XRY where you can find all device profiles with support for RAM extractions. A goldmine of data right at your fingertips.

Improved device detection

With the new release, device identification has been improved for unknown Android devices and devices that are in a BFU (before first unlock) state.

Normally, when you connect a device that is not detected, XRY will show you a list of options for generic profiles that might work to extract the phone. These suggestions are based on information that the system can get from the device, like its manufacturer.

Now, generic profiles have seen significant improvements to make things simpler for you when dealing with unknown devices.

Support for iOS 17.4.1

Apple iOS 17.4.1 is out, but XRY has you covered for that. We offer full support for iOS 17.4.1 with the latest release.

Moreover, we’ve got a surprise in store for you. Here at MSAB we are finding that as of iOS 17.4, we are now decoding more deleted data than ever before from iTunes backups. We’ve detailed it all in a blog post. Read more about the benefits you can reap from the iOS 17.4 update using XRY.
