Apple and Google smartphones may have tighter regulation in Europe after panel ruled that location data is private.

The Financial Times reported that Apple and Google smartphones look set to come under tighter regulation in Europe after an EU data protection advisory panel ruled this week that location information collected by the devices should be classed as personal data.

This is likely to mean strict limits on how location data can be collected and stored by smartphone companies, telecoms operators and any businesses hoping to run location-related services on phones.

Police departments may not fully understand their responsibilities, according to a study led by a Michigan State University criminologist.

Police officials should consider hiring more digital forensic examiners or, failing that, improving their work environment, said Thomas Holt, MSU assistant professor of criminal justice.

His study appears in the May issue of the Journal of Contemporary Criminal Justice.

Apple iPhones and 3G iPads are recording and storing details of all their owners' movements, researchers claim.

The findings, first reported by the Guardian newspaper, will come as a surprise to most iPhone users, as their devices do not give any visual indication that such data is being recorded.

But they are no surprise to the developers here at MSAB who have been recovering this data in XRY for some considerable time.
